What It Does

The pillar categorizes fighters into distinct archetypes like 'Striker', 'Grappler', or 'Brawler' based on their career statistics. It then queries a historical database to determine the win rates for specific stylistic clashes. This provides a statistical baseline for how the fight is likely to unfold, independent of recent fighter form or media hype.

Why It Matters

It provides a crucial layer of analysis that simple win/loss records miss, identifying potentially undervalued fighters whose style is a historical kryptonite to their opponent. This edge is critical in a sport where a single stylistic advantage can completely dictate the fight's outcome.

How It Works

First, both fighters in a matchup are assigned a primary archetype using their career stats like takedown accuracy and significant strike output. Second, the system searches a database of past fights for every instance of that specific archetype matchup, for example, 'Grappler vs. Striker'. Finally, it calculates the historical win percentage and adjusts it based on key physical factors like reach and stance.

Methodology

Fighter archetypes are determined via a k-means clustering algorithm applied to normalized career statistics, primarily Significant Strikes Landed per Minute (SLpM), Takedown Average per 15 min, and Submission Average per 15 min. The core matchup win rate is calculated as: (Wins of Archetype A vs. Archetype B) / (Total Fights between Archetype A vs. Archetype B). This rate is then modified by up to +/- 5% based on a 3-inch or greater reach differential.
