Volume Profile Visible Range (VPVR) Levels
Pinpoint support and resistance with volume data.
Overview
This pillar analyzes the Volume Profile Visible Range (VPVR), a powerful technical tool that maps traded volume at specific price levels. It reveals areas of high market conviction, helping you identify true support and resistance zones that simple price charts miss.
What It Does
VPVR aggregates all trading volume within a specific chart view and displays it as a horizontal histogram. This visualization clearly identifies High Volume Nodes (HVNs), where significant trading occurred, and Low Volume Nodes (LVNs), which are price gaps with little activity. The single price level with the most volume is called the Point of Control (POC).
Why It Matters
Price action is driven by volume. By understanding where the market has previously committed significant capital, you gain a predictive edge on where price is likely to stall, reverse, or accelerate. This moves beyond simple line charts to show the underlying structure of the market.
How It Works
First, a specific time period is selected on a price chart. The tool then scans every price level within that period and sums the total volume traded at each level. This data is plotted as horizontal bars next to the price axis, creating a volume distribution profile. Key levels like the POC and Value Area are automatically highlighted for analysis.
Methodology
The analysis calculates the total traded volume for discrete price levels within the visible chart range. It identifies the Point of Control (POC) as the price with maximum traded volume. The Value Area (VA) is the price range, typically encompassing 70% of the total volume, where the market found fair value. Low Volume Nodes (LVNs) are troughs in the volume histogram, indicating price rejection.
Edge & Advantage
While most traders focus only on price, this pillar reveals the market's conviction at those prices, providing a clearer map of high-probability reversal and continuation zones.
Key Indicators
-
Point of Control (POC)
highThe single price level with the highest traded volume, acting as a powerful magnet for price.
-
Value Area High/Low (VAH/VAL)
highThe upper and lower boundaries of the price range where 70% of volume occurred, often acting as primary support and resistance.
-
Low Volume Nodes (LVNs)
mediumPrice areas with very little traded volume, known as liquidity gaps, where price tends to move quickly.
Data Sources
-
Provides the raw, real-time and historical price and volume data required for the calculation.
-
Aggregates exchange data and provides the tools to calculate and display VPVR on charts.
Example Questions This Pillar Answers
- → Will Bitcoin's price stay above its current weekly Point of Control for the next 48 hours?
- → Will Ethereum trade within its monthly Value Area for the remainder of the week?
- → If Solana breaks below its current support, will it quickly fall through the next Low Volume Node?
